Duties:

 

The Town of Woodstock's character is defined by both the variety and abundance of its open spaces. Land conservation has been a successful local priority in Woodstock, and the town is recognized as a leader in preserving its rural landscapes. The protection and maintenance of its trees is essential and a logical extension to the general welfare and safeguarding of the town's aesthetic characteristics.

 

MISSION

The Town of Woodstock Tree Committee seeks to assist the Woodstock Town Board in the management of its tree resource through programs of education, protection, restoration, disease control, and planting. The Tree Committee will liaison with the Planning Board, Civic Design, The Woodstock Environmental Committee, the Comeau Stewardship Committee and any other town government groups. The committee seeks to achieve this mission through the following:

 

  Work with the Highway and Maintenance Departments to identify hazardous, diseased, and high-risk trees along the Town's roadways and on Town owned properties.

Establish a tree care program including inventory, protection and maintenance of trees on Town properties.

 

Enhance the town's tree resources through a program of planting and restoration.

 

Educate private land owners about the preservation and care of trees.  

 

Engage elected officials, utility companies, and civic groups on matters of tree care, funding, grants, and general support.

 

Periodically review Town laws regarding tree preservation and submit to the Town Board recommended amendments for their consideration.

 

Identify specific historic, ornamental and shade trees on Town properties.

 

Enhance public awareness of tree preservation by education, celebrations (Arbor Day) and fundraisers.

 

Seek funding through grants, donations and community fundraisers.

 

Assist the Town Board in coordinating with utility companies that routinely maintain tree clearances near the town’s roadways.

 

Assist in developing a comprehensive approach to tree management, based on sound arboriculture and forestry practices, and an ongoing emphasis on inventory, planting, and pr. The Tree Committee will assist the town in developing a simple, cost-effective method for prioritizing, assessing and mapping a tree inventory

within key sections of the Town’s right-of-way’s and Town properties.

 

Inventory and prioritized for eventual removal fallen trees on Town properties.

 

Seek solutions for damage to trees from invasive insects and diseases.
